Before You Book Anything
Your passport is the first thing to check, not the last. Most countries require at least six months of validity from your date of travel, and some also want two or more blank pages. If your passport expires within a year, renew it before you start planning — a late renewal is the single most common reason a first trip gets delayed.
Once your passport is sorted, decide on a destination that matches your visa situation and budget rather than the other way around. Malaysia, Thailand, the Maldives, and the UAE are the most straightforward first trips from Dhaka; Schengen Europe and the US need far more lead time.
The Document Folder
Keep one physical folder and one folder on your phone with the same contents:
- Passport bio page and any current visas
- Confirmed flight itinerary and hotel bookings
- Travel insurance certificate
- Bank statement covering the last 3–6 months
- NID copy, and for some visas a trade licence, salary certificate, or NOC from your employer
- Passport-size photos to the destination's exact specification
Carry printed copies even where an e-visa is issued. Immigration officers at either end can ask to see them.
Money and Cards
Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked on first use abroad. Carry a mix: some cash in the local currency or US dollars for arrival, and at least one card that works internationally. Endorsement of foreign currency in your passport is required when you buy USD against your passport quota in Bangladesh — keep that receipt.
Airport exchange rates are poor. Change a small amount for taxis and your first meal, then use ATMs or city exchange houses for the rest.
Packing Without Overpacking
Check the airline's baggage allowance for your specific fare — budget carriers often sell tickets with cabin baggage only. Pack medicines in your carry-on with prescriptions, keep a change of clothes in the cabin bag, and photograph your checked bag before you hand it over.
A universal travel adapter, a power bank within the airline's watt-hour limit, and a copy of your hotel address written down (not just on your phone) will save you more trouble than anything else.
At the Airport and On Arrival
Reach the airport three hours before an international flight. Have your return or onward ticket ready to show — many countries ask for proof you intend to leave. Fill in the arrival card on the plane if one is handed out.
On arrival, use official prepaid taxi counters or a well-known ride app rather than drivers who approach you inside the terminal. Message someone at home once you reach your hotel.
