Why Do It by Cruise
Ha Long Bay and the quieter Lan Ha Bay are best seen on an overnight cruise. Day trips from Hanoi spend more time on the bus than the water. A one- or two-night cruise gets you kayaking at dawn, into the caves before the crowds, and anchored among the karsts after the day boats have left.
A Typical Day on Board
- Late-morning boarding and lunch as the boat sails out
- Afternoon kayaking or a bamboo-boat ride through a lagoon, and a swim stop
- A visit to one of the large limestone caves
- Sunset on the top deck, dinner, and an optional squid-fishing session
- Early-morning tai chi and a light breakfast before the second day's activity
Kayaking Practicalities
No experience is needed — the water inside the bay is sheltered and calm. Wear quick-dry clothes and sandals with a strap, use the dry bag for your phone, and put on the life jacket even for a short paddle. Routes usually run 45–90 minutes through arches and into hidden lagoons.
The Caves
Sung Sot (Surprise Cave) is the largest and most visited; smaller caves on the Lan Ha side are quieter. Paths are lit but can be wet and slippery, so grippy shoes matter more than anything else you pack.
