In the Maldives, the resort is the destination — you will spend almost your whole trip on one island. Choose the property first, then fit your dates around its transfer schedule and your budget. The three things that decide the price are the villa type, the meal plan, and how you get there.
Overwater vs Beach Villa
An overwater villa is the classic image: a deck over the lagoon, steps into the water, and total privacy. A beach villa gives you more space, direct sand access, and a noticeably lower rate at most resorts. Many couples book two or three nights in each. If budget is tight, a beach villa at a better resort beats an overwater villa at a weaker one.
Meal Plans Explained
- Bed & breakfast — cheapest on paper, but resort lunches and dinners are expensive, so it rarely saves money unless you plan to eat light.
- Half board — breakfast and dinner. The most common honeymoon choice.
- Full board — all three meals, usually buffet.
- All-inclusive — meals plus selected drinks and sometimes excursions. Best value at resorts far from Malé where you cannot pop out.
Getting There: Speedboat vs Seaplane
Resorts near Malé use a 15–45 minute speedboat transfer, included or lightly priced. Resorts further out use a seaplane, which is scenic but costs noticeably more per person and only flies in daylight — a late arrival into Malé may mean a night in an airport hotel before you fly out the next morning. Check the transfer type and cost before you fall in love with a resort.
When to Go
November to April is the dry season with the calmest water and best snorkelling. May to October is the wet season: shorter, heavier showers, greener rates, and still plenty of sun between the rain. Ramadan and the Eid holidays push prices up regardless of season.
